Lawn Fertilizer Recommendations
- The synthesis of certain plant components is dependent on the potassium levels. Soils that are low in natural potassium need to be supplemented. Soil tests determine the levels of potassium in the soil. If needed, add supplemental potassium.
- Nitrogen encourages growth and enhances the green color in grasses. Too little nitrogen causes yellowing of plants and increased susceptibility to diseases. Too much nitrogen reduces root growth and increases disease susceptibility. Soluble forms or quick-release nitrogen is inexpensive and produces a fast response in the color and growth of grass.
- Phosphorus is critical in the early stages of grasses in that it stimulates root growth and affects the vigor of young plants. Because phosphorus does not move well in soil, mix it in well with soil surrounding the plant roots. Test the soil and add phosphorus as needed.
