Operating theatres are almost synonymous with television series. Often, TV shows that depict emergency rooms and hospital situations, like Greys Anatomy and Scrubs, are fans of the operating theatre. It is also for this reason that people outside the medical profession get curious about what operating theatres really are.

Operating theatres are amphitheatre like rooms with the operating table at the centre and several rows of elevated chairs at the back or surrounding the table. The idea of this facility is to have surgeons perform the operation in the middle of the room, while spectators usually medical students watch as the surgery process is being performed.

For other countries, including those under the Commonwealth of Nations, the term is used synonymously with operating room and operating suite.

Operating theatres are very important in the field of medicine, especially for medical students who are still studying to become a surgeon. Here, they are able to see first-hand everything that is happening in an OR the entire process, from start to end. With this, measures are taken to ensure that everything in the theatre is in order and following a certified process.

To tackle every issue facing this medical field, an annual conference was established.
