How to Use Fertilizer Spikes for Arborvitae
- 1). Soak dry ground with a garden hose so the ground is soft enough to accept the fertilizer spikes. Place the plastic cap included with the fertilizer spikes onto the end of the first spike.
- 2). Drive the fertilizer spikes into the ground at the drip line of the tree or shrub, using a rubber or plastic mallet. Stop driving the spike when the plastic cap remains above the ground. The drip line begins at the outer edge of the canopy created by the tree's branches. This is where active root growth is taking place (referred to as the root zone). The number of spikes to use varies depending on the size of the drip line diameter (see Tips).
- 3). Remove the plastic cap to use when driving subsequent fertilizer spikes. Force the fertilizer spike two inches below the ground with the handle of the mallet.
- 4). Water around the arborvitae regularly. The fertilizer will feed the tree or shrub and keep it green and beautiful.
