How to Make an Outdoor Barbecue Island
- 1). Measure the height (from the base to the underside of the burner area), width and length of your barbecue grill and side burner with a tape measure.
- 2). Lay out the island in your yard using wood stakes to mark the corners of each wall. The side walls are as wide as the width of your barbecue plus 6 inches, and the length is as long as the length of the barbecue and side burner plus 2½ feet of counter space. The height equals the height of the barbecue grill measured in Step 1.
- 3). Build the walls of the barbecue island with 6-inch concrete blocks and mortar and trowel, making sure one block is placed across the top of two blocks below it. Build two interior walls, one next to the barbecue and the other next to the side burner.
- 4). Set a 4-inch-thick, flat concrete slab tile on top of the interior walls, securing it in place with mortar to complete the island.
- 5). Install the barbecue and side burner in the island by setting them on each side of the counter top space.
