How to Cover Retaining Walls Attached to Your Home

    • 1). Plant climbing plants at the base of the retaining wall for a natural look. This is particularly effective for natural stone retaining walls that have slight outcroppings. These outcroppings can be used by vines to help them twine. A solid-faced retaining wall can be made more vine-friendly by installing a few screws on the exterior and training the vines to wrap around them. The downside is that climbing plants will die off every fall (you'll have to remove the dead tendrils), and if they are not perennial, you will have to replant in spring.

    • 2). Paint the retaining wall. To effectively hide a retaining wall, paint it green to help it blend in with your landscape. However, you can also use this wall to get creative and make it a showpiece instead of an eyesore. If you have artistic talent or know someone who does, paint a mural on the wall. You can also use stencils to paint designs on the wall.

    • 3). Use the wall to hang plants. Get over-the-fence plant hangers and secure them with spikes at the top of the wall. Hang baskets of plants on these hangers. Large, showy plants that have a trailing growth habit are ideal for this use.

    • 4). Mask the retaining wall with a trellis. A plastic trellis can be installed over the front of the retaining wall to help hide it. This trellis can then be used to hang plant baskets or train vines. This makes the retaining wall look less natural, but can effectively mask its appearance.
