How To Install NIC Card?
NIC stands for Network Interface Controller or Network Interface Card, a very common term used by a computer network administrator but for a common PC user does not know how to install and for him it is far cry. In this article I will let you know about the NIC functions and steps which you should follow for installing a NIC controller. The Network Interface controller is the important equipment installed in the computer which enables the computer to connect with the computer network. Through this connection you can communicate with severs as well as other computers of network. Each NIC has a unique serial number which is known as MAC address. The NIC uses the following techniques to transfer data:
€ Polling is used where CPU constantly monitors device for services.
€ Programmed I/O is used where the Microprocessor send alerts to the designated device.
€ Interrupt driven I/O is used where the device sends alert when ready for data transmission.
€ Directory Memory Access is used where peripheral device access the data bus to communicate with the memory.
Steps for installing a NIC card:
A NIC installation is a very simple process. Before installing you must switch off the power supply for avoiding any electrical hazard. It is always good to wear a static electricity discharge strap while working with the PC's components.
1. Remove the screws holding the sides of the case and slowly slide off both the panels.
2. Find the PCI slots on your computer motherboard and remove the metal backing plate by taking out the screws holding it by slowly sliding it up and out. You can take help of flat-blade metal screw driver or pliers, taking care of sharp edges left behind.
3. Now take the NIC card and place it in one of the PCI slots by aligning the guide notches with the PCI slot. And remember to keep jack facing outside the PC.
4. Firmly press straight down with gentle pressure such that the mounting bracket is properly aligned with the slot.
5. Remove the network interface card from its anti-static bag and place it over the slot with the jack facing outside the PC
6. Check whether card is properly installed end to end to secure it in the slot so that the gold contacts at the bottom of the NIC disappears totally in the slot.
7. Replace the NIC mounting bracket to the case with a screw and plug your machine back in. Plug in the Ethernet wire to the RJ-45 jack and the other end into DSL, modem, router or directly to another PC.
8. Now hardware installation is complete and you have reached on driver installation part. The NIC comes with a disk containing the necessary drivers for the software installation. The Disk contains self automated program which get started as you insert the disk, just follow the instruction. Follow the network wizard located in the Start-Settings-Control Panel and complete the procedure.
So by following the above mentioned steps you can install a NIC card on your own without the need of any computer technician which will charge you a hefty amount of doing a simple task. You can use services of the well known company at your place for problems related to windows maintenance, any hardware issues related to motherboard etc.
