How to Plant & Prune a Vineyard

    • 1). Select a location for your vineyard that is in full sun with rich, well-drained soil. Choose a southern slope for the warmest weather. Avoid northern slopes and low-lying areas that could chill more easily.

    • 2). Dig holes for the grapevines in the early spring as soon as the ground thaws. Dig holes for the vines that are as deep as the roots and twice as wide. Space the holes 6 to 8 feet apart for trellis plantings and 4 feet apart for arbor plantings.

    • 3). Prune off any long roots that don't fit in the hole. Cut back all of the canes to the base of the plant except for the most vigorously growing one.

    • 4). Place the grapevines in the holes and fill the holes with soil. Water the grapes well for five to 10 minutes.
