How do I Maximize the Heat From a Pool Solar Heater?

    • 1). Size your solar panels, so the surface area of the solar panels is equal to at least 50 percent of your pool's surface, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Add more solar panels if sun exposure is less than optimal or you want to heat the pool past the summer season.

    • 2). Locate the solar panels where they will get the most sun. You can mount the solar panels on the roof of the house or near the pool. A southern exposure and a perpendicular tilt toward the sun's rays are best. If the location of the solar panels is not optimal, increase the number of panels to equal 75 to 100 or more percent of your pool's surface area, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

    • 3). Use a pool cover when the pool is not in use, especially in spring and fall. About 95 percent of a pool's heat is lost at the surface through evaporation. A pool cover will prevent heat loss. A plastic transparent pool cover will actually increase the heat in your pool because the sun's rays can penetrate the cover to heat the water.

    • 4). Use glazed solar panels; they retain heat better. In warm climates, you can use unglazed solar panels without losing heating efficiency.

    • 5). Remove dust with a soft cloth from your solar panels. Dust can reduce the heating efficiency of your solar panels. Dust is a problem in dry climates. In wetter climates, frequent rainfall will keep your solar panels clean.

    • 6). Determine if your pool pump is sufficient for optimal water circulation through the solar panels. Call your solar heating company and find out what kind of pump is recommended for your size pool. If one pump is not optimal, install a second pump. Most pumps for swimming pools are stronger than they need to be.

    • 7). Clean your pool water with a skimmer to get rid of debris and keep your filter clean. These measures will increase the efficiency of your pump and are critical if you use your pump to circulate water through the solar panels.
