    • 1). Address the cover letter to the hiring manager. When sending a cover letter online, the first paragraph should refer to the hiring manager by name, according to Business Week. If you don't know the person's name, don't worry. There are a couple of ways to find it. Call the organization's human resources department and ask for the hiring manager's name and correct spelling. If that doesn't work, visit the company's website to find out who you would report to. Management names are usually listed under the "About Us" section of the company's website.

    • 2). Let the hiring manager know where you heard about the job posting. For example, an applicant might mention she heard about a job opening from a specific job board or the classified section of the local newspaper.

    • 3). The second section should include information about your background and relevant work experience. Sections should be broken up into short paragraphs. It makes the text easier to read online. Focus on professional experience that most closely matches the job description. For example, if a candidate is applying to a marketing research position, an applicant may focus on a market research project he participated in at their previous employer.

    • 4). The last paragraph of the cover letter should be a call to action aimed at the hiring manager. Information in this section should encourage the hiring manager to set up an interview. Explain why you're a good fit for the position and ask for an opportunity to discuss the position further. This section should also include online attachments such as a résumé and work samples (if required).
