How to Use a Fence Post as a Table Leg
- 1). Clean the fence post. If the fence post has been used or stored outside, it will need to be thoroughly cleaned. Brush off any visible dirt and wipe the post down with a cloth and a multipurpose cleaning solution.
- 2). Sand down any rough edges on the fence post. Depending on the material that it is made of, the fence post may have sharp splinters or cracks in the wood. Use a medium to rough grade of sandpaper to smooth out the fence post.
- 3). Measure the height for the legs of the table. Decide how tall you want your table to be and then cut the fence post down to size. Most commercial fence posts are between 4 and 6 feet in height. Table legs are typically sized at between 28 and 36 inches. Mark your cut line on the wood and then saw it off to size.
- 4). Make sure all the fence posts are level. You may need to trim the top and bottom of the fence post with your saw to ensure that the table does not rock back and forth when it is finished. Use a level if necessary and make sure both end cuts are smooth.
- 5). Attach the fence post to the bottom of the table. Use a drill and screws. Go at an angle on each side of the post and insert the screws. Make sure that the top of the screw does not go through the surface of the table. Use three to four screws per leg. If you prefer, you can attach brackets to the underside of the table and then attach the posts to the brackets.
