How to Look Up a Permit Project Number
- 1). Make sure you find out the address of the property you want to check out. It is important to include the street number and ZIP code. If you have access to the property, many construction sites will list their permit or project numbers on the perimeter of the sites.
- 2). Go online and search permits under the city or county where the construction is taking place. Most cities or counties have their own website where you can find not only the regulations for permits but also learn whether a property owner has a permit to build. For example, if you live in Sonoma County, Calif., and want to know whether a business has a permit to build, you would search "look up project permits Sonoma County." The search would take you to the page "Permit History Lookup" on the Sonoma County website.
- 3). Enter the address or the property owner's name. Information is not always kept up to date, so if you don't see the property listed be sure to call the office that handles the permits to verify that the business or home owner has the proper permits.
