Flokati Rug Cleaning
- Flokati rugs are priced by weight, measured in grams of wool per square meter. Heavier rugs are thicker and fluffier. A rug with 2,000 g per square meter will not be as plush or thick as one with 4,000 g per square meter. Lighter rugs are easier to clean than heavier rugs.
- To remove dust, shake your Flokati rug outdoors. Do this regularly. A vigorous shaking will give you a fluffier rug. You can also fluff your Flokati rug with a garden rake. A flexible wood or plastic rake is best. Rake gently from the bottom to the top of the woolen strands. It is normal for some wool to get caught in the rake. This will not hurt your rug.
- Do not run a vacuum cleaner over a Flokati rug because the strands will get caught in the rotating brush. Use the suction head of the vacuum cleaner to clean spots. Do not use a suction head that rotates.
- Wash your Flokati rug with a mild soap made to clean wool. Do not dry clean. Do not use chlorine bleach. You can put a small rug in a washing machine set on a gentle cycle and cold water.
- Air dry but avoid direct sunlight. Sunlight can change the color of your rug. Since a Flokati rug is made of wool, it will return to its natural state. A properly cleaned Flokati rug will keep its sheen and softness, although it might shed some.
