How to Draw a Dragon for Beginners
- 1). Draw an outline of the head shape and the body shape from a side view. The head outline should be pointed and it should have a long neck. The body itself should be long. The hind leg should be larger than the front leg. Mark where the wing should start and end and make it proportional to the body. The wing should start just behind the front leg on the dragon's shoulder. Add a tail behind the hind leg. This is just a rough outline.
- 2). Alter any areas of the dragon's outline that seem out of proportion by using an eraser. If the head seems too small for the body, for example, you can draw a larger head and then erase the smaller outline of the head. You may want to change the shape of the tail. You could make the tail so that it falls straight behind the dragon or you could sketch it so that it curls around in front of the dragon.
- 3). Add details such as an eye on the dragon's head. The eye should be like a long slit with an eyeball. Draw a nostril near the front of the head. Sketch a line from the front of the dragon's face to a point under the dragon's eye. You could make the tail come to a point. Add three "toes" to the dragon's front and hind foot and draw talons on each toe. Draw horned fin-like spines on the dragon's head.
- 4). Sketch more finer details on to your dragon such as triangle-shaped teeth on the mouth line. Add more fin-like spines going down the dragon from his head to his shoulders where the wing begins. Draw spine lines on to the wing so it resembles a bat wing. Pencil in more fin-like spines behind the wing. You can make these spines go the entire length of the tail or end them on the dragon's rump.
- 5). Review illustrations of dragon sketches for ideas. Put the finishing touches on your dragon or make further alterations. Experiment with different looks by adding an ear or drawing two horns on the dragon's head instead of spikes. If you want it to be a fire-breathing dragon, draw flames coming out of the dragon's mouth. Add some skin between the toes for flight. If you wish, add color with watercolors, markers, or pencil crayons.
