How to Make Your Comments Work For You!

We can talk all day about how to write a successful blog (watch this space for that one) but what we often overlook is the fact that there are two parts to a blog post.
Part 1 is about telling the story...
from writer to reader.
It's a lesson learned, it's a distribution of knowledge, an opinion given.
But Part 2 is what makes a blog post truly great - and that part is about the comments.
Comments speak of inspiration, of spontaneity, of sharing.
It's where the core learning and ripple effect begins...
So the next time you read a post, look out for the learning you can gain not just from the writer but from the readers.
And, the next time you set out to comment on a post try a few of these tips: 1.
Sounds obvious but according to a study by Nielson, only 1% of readers actively contribute to a blog.
2.
Make sure you're contributing to the conversation and playing an active part in the learning shared.
Don't say things like 'I agree'.
It does nothing for your online image.
3.
Don't forget to include or reference posts you've written on your site or add a link back to your site.
You may or may not know this but apart from rewarding the writer with a comment and sharing learning, commenting can be a real traffic driver as well as raising brand awareness.
So link back.
4.
On the point of linking back, comment (and link) only if you connect with a post or it's relevant to you and what you do.
Sometimes, I get random comments from people who obviously haven't read or connected with what I've written...
in these cases, I never publish their comments.
If you want your comment published, make sure you're doing it for honest reasons.
5.
Use your comment as an opportunity to establish relationships.
Blogs are purposed to act as a dialogue.
Don't think of your comment simply as a reply to the writer of the post (although it may be); if you connect with another comment from a reader, why not respond to that person and establish a connection...
you'll be surprised by what a simple conversation can lead to.
So those are my tips? What are yours? Do you have a comments strategy? Leave a comment and let us know...
but whatever you do, make your comment count.
