    • 1). Brush the wrought-iron surfaces thoroughly with the wire brush to remove any flaking paint or rust. Work carefully and diligently to remove every loose fleck.

    • 2). Sand the railing well with the sandpaper to create a rough surface for the primer to adhere to.

    • 3). Wipe down the entire railing well with the tack cloth to remove dust and debris from the wrought-iron surfaces.

    • 4). Spread newspaper carefully over the area beneath the railing to protect surfaces from overspray.

    • 5). Shake the primer can vigorously to prepare the primer for application. Hold the can about 14 to 16 inches away from the wrought iron and press the nozzle of the can. Apply the primer in an even fashion to coat the entire surface of the railing with primer. Allow the primer to dry completely before you proceed.

    • 6). Shake the exterior spray paint in the same fashion. Holding the can at the same distance, apply the paint using the same method. Coat the railings thoroughly with an even layer of paint, ensuring that paint reaches every crevice and corner of the railings. Allow the paint to dry the recommended amount of time and then apply a second coat of paint to the railing.
