How to Prepare for House Guests With a Baby

    • 1). Pull out all that old baby equipment from the garage. See, there's a reason you saved all that stuff! Bring out the baby swing, the infant seat, baby basket or portacrib, the baby gym and some rattles. Make sure to wash anything washable, replace batteries, and clean plastic with soap and water.

    • 2). Make a cozy room for them, with extra baby blankets or the portacrib set up and ready. There should be shades on the windows, since they may want to nap when the baby naps, and a darkened room helps. You may want to pick a room farther from your room, if possible, because a baby will cry during the night and you don't want to wake up every time the baby does.

    • 3). Set out towels, and a baby towel and washcloth if you have that leftover from your own kids. It's a nice touch to have fresh diapers, baby shampoo and soap, even a pacifier or a cute new outfit, for the regal treatment.

    • 4). Have some snacks and easy-to-eat meals made up in advance. You won't believe how busy it can get when there's a crying baby in the house, and everyone is ravenous, including a nursing mother. You'll want to feed your guests often, and without the stress of cooking constantly. Have a few frozen entrees and when they arrive, make sure your guests know they can feel free to heat them up if they're hungry at any time--even in the middle of the night.

    • 5). Set a rocking chair in their room, or plan to give them access to the television during the night. They may be up to nurse or feed the baby, and sometimes a guest may want a place to go that isn't where another mom or dad is sleeping.
