The short term acute gout treatment starts by taking certain drugs that help relieve the pain and inflammation. Some of the most common over the counter non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs are; Advil, alive, ibuprofen, etc, which are usually the first choice of treatment, but sometimes the oral dosages have some side effects, like heart conditions, upset stomach, water retention, kidney problems, etc. This means that people sensible or predisposed to these health issues should avoid this medications. Unfortunately, also despite aspirin is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, it shouldn't be taken as it has the potential to increase uric acid levels in the blood.

Short Term Acute Gout Treatment Medications

Some over the counter NSAIDs include Advil, ibuprofen, Motrin, aspirins, etc. While some of the prescribed NSAIDs are Indocin or indomethacin, Diclofenac, etc, among others.

Colchicine blocks the anti-inflammatory reactions, but it could have some very toxic effects, and side effects as gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, vomit, diarrhea, etc.

Less toxic are the NSAIDs which are usually the physician first choice of therapy as indocin or indomethacin.

If those fail, usually they prescribe steroids such as prednisone or medrol, and can be taken orally or injected.

Usually pain and inflammation relief is felt within 48 hours after the initial acute gout treatment.

Long Term Acute Gout Treatment

Long term acute gout treatment aim at prevention, by controlling uric acid production, excretion and build up, and is usually a lifetime treatment.

The most common prevention medication is allopurinol, which is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, this one slows down the production of uric acid by the body.

Other medication are used to encourage the excretion of this acid, as probenecid, which is one of the most common among the medications called uricosurics. Besides lowering the levels of uric acid by aiding the kidneys to expel it out, they help in dissolving the the uric acid crystals in and around the joints.

Usually, in the middle of a flare up, uric acid production slowing medications are better avoided if you are not currently using them, because they could prolong the episode more, so instead the doctors sometimes, prescribe low doses of colchicine to prevent an attack in the short term phase of the acute gout treatment.

Other people don't require medications for the long term acute gout treatment phase, but are advised to follow dietary guidelines by following a low purine diet.
