Step-by-Step on Drawing Dragons
- 1). Sketch out a medium-sized oval to represent the head of this dragon. Create this basic object in the upper half of the piece of paper to give you room to draw the long neck and large body.
- 2). Draw a curved line downward from the back of the dragon's head to form the neck. Use a large oval at the base of this neck guideline to represent the body. The top of the body outline should have an indented shape, allowing the back of the dragon to easily curve into any position. Use light pencil strokes when creating these basic guidelines.
- 3). Create a long, curved line on the rear-end of the dragon's body to represent the tail. Draw bent lines underneath the body to help create the legs of the dragon. Notice how the limbs bend in the appropriate places in the picture you are using as a reference. Lightly sketch these limbs accordingly.
- 4). Use straight lines to construct the basic shape of the wings as they attach to each side of the dragon's body. Lightly sketch these lines until you are confident in the basic design. The ends of these wings might appear similar to that of the ends of umbrellas, using arched skin that meets common points.
- 5). Draw two small circles on the end of the dragon's end to depict the nostrils. Sketch out semi-circular lines around the top of these nostrils to accent these features more clearly. Move up the face and draw two proportionally placed ovals near the top of the head; these will represent the eyes of the dragon. Draw a small circle inside each eye to act as the pupil.
- 6). Create the mouth of the dragon using a slightly curved line underneath the nose. Pay close attention to how the line wraps around the side of the head as it is angled in the picture. If the mouth is adjacent, use skinny, triangular shapes to represent the sharp teeth. Clean up the jaw bone structuring to round out the image of the head.
- 7). Draw small circular objects on top of the dragon's head to act as the ears. If you want to add more creativity to this picture, draw long horns behind the ears with curved lines. Move down the back of the dragon's neck with sharp, triangular points to create the detailed feature.
- 8). Move down the front of the dragon's chest with a smooth, contoured line until you get to the front legs. Lightly pencil in the muscular features of the animal, keeping the legs at a thick width and ensuring that the joint bends in the appropriate angle. Create long toes for this creature with triangle-like claws at the end of each front leg.
- 9). Create a streamlined underbelly of the dragon until the hind legs interrupt this feature. Draw a curved line on the underbelly filled with vertical lines to represent the textured, reptilian-like stomach.

Draw a curved line up into the body of the dragon to represent the thigh of the hind leg most visible to the viewer of this picture. Thicken the entire leg, adding similar toes and claws to this leg as you did the front legs. - 11
Detail the tail of the dragon, ensuring that the long, thick feature meets at a central point at the very end. Add a spade-like shape to the end of this tail to create your own unique image for the dragon. - 12
Add lines to each of the wings so that the end points meet at a common structure or bone, as this is how the dragon controls its wing movement. Erase any guidelines you used, and be careful not to erase any of the important marks.
