    • 1). Insert the disk you want to format if it is not an installed hard drive.

    • 2). Click on "My Computer" on your desktop.

    • 3). Select and highlight the disk you want to format by single clicking on the icon.

    • 4). Right click on the highlighted icon. A text box of options will pop up on your screen.

    • 5). Choose "Format" from the options given. This will open the "Format" window.

    • 6). Select the options you wish to change on the disk. In most cases the "Capacity," "File System" and the "Allocation unit size" do not need to be changed. If you wish to give the disk a name, such as My Photos, type that name into the "Volume label" text box.

    • 7). Click the "Quick Format" option if you only want to quickly delete any existing files on the disk.

    • 8). Click "Start" once you have made your option selections. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the process.
