Obsessive compulsive disorder does not choose particular people to afflict. It cuts across the spectrum, affects adult as much as it affects children .The rich and the poor have all been afflicted by OCD.

Children may just try to copy what the adults or their peers are doing; eventually develop anxiety which must be reduced by engaging in compulsive behaviors. For instance boys will always do what they have seen their fathers do. A very good example is a case where a child bites his finger just because he saw his father do the same. He will by default find himself biting it when faced with a problem which is making him anxious.

The compulsion may not be noticeable to start with however, it eventually perpetuates itself to the extend of interfering with the day-to-day life of the child. Take for instance the finger biting which the child copied from the parents ends up preoccupying the child that he may not even be able to concentrate in class because all his attention is on the finger. This child may not even do his homework because he did not follow the lessons. If he is to be reprimanded because he has not completed the homework, then fear sets in which in effect causes anxiety, which can only be reduced by finger biting. If remedial actions are not taken at this particular point the child's life may be taken over by this compulsion, which might then disorganize his entire life.

However it must be noted here that children are in the discovery stage and therefore want to enquire more about the environment in which they operate thus they repeatedly do things which they think has the answers they are looking for.

Obsessive compulsive disorder is caused by the inability of human brains to cope with fear which makes them anxious. It is advisable at this stage to take curative measures such as Behavioral Therapy whose benefits outstrip those of drugs which may be too strong for children. This line of treatment takes a long time but at least we are sure that the side effects of drugs such as addiction and effects on the other parts of the body are eliminated.

Parents are advised to be on the lookout for signs of obsessive compulsive disorder in their children so that early intervention can be administered hence completely eliminating this problem of obsessive compulsion in children.
