How to Set Posts for a Garden Fence

    • 1). Decide on the height of your fence before you buy the posts. Purchase fence posts that are 24 inches longer than your fence pickets (since you will set them 2 feet below ground).

    • 2). Mark each spot where a fence post will go around your garden. Typically you will place a post every 6 to 8 feet, depending on what type of material you use.

    • 3). Dig a hole 24 inches deep at each spot you marked. Dig the hole so that it is three times wider than the fence post.

    • 4). Toss two or three shovels worth of gravel into the bottom of each hole. This will help with drainage.

    • 5). Place the fence posts into the holes. Center the posts as close to the middle as you can. Have a friend hold the posts upright.

    • 6). Fill the holes with quick-drying cement. Leave 3 to 4 inches of space between the cement and the tops of the holes. Shovel the extra dirt from the holes into the last few inches, and pat the dirt down until it is firm.

    • 7). Check and make sure the posts are straight with a level. Adjust the posts as needed to make them level. Use some 2-by-4 pieces of wood to prop up the posts if it is windy. This will help keep the posts from moving while the cement sets overnight.
