Exercises for After Rotary Cuff Surgery

    Lying Bent Arm Lift

    • The lying bent arm lift will engage the rotator cuff to help rebuild strength and flexibility after a surgery. To begin this exercise, you will want to use a very lightweight dumbbell that weighs between 1 to 3 pounds. Only use a dumbbell if your physician has deemed it appropriate.

To begin this exercise, lay stomach down on the edge of a bed or exercise bench. Grab a dumbbell with your left hand and allow your arm to stretch down to the floor. In a slow and controlled movement, lift your hand up to your head while keeping your elbow bent. Stop the movement when your hand is at shoulder level. Carefully lower your hand and repeat 8 to 10 times before switching sides.

    Forearm Lift

    • This exercise will engage the rotator cuff while gently challenging this muscle to rebuild itself. To begin this exercise you will need to lie on a flat surface, such as a table or the floor. Lie down on your right side and use a small hand weight that is only 1 to 2 lbs. Rest your left arm on your body. Gently bend the right elbow so it makes a 90-degree angle from your bicep to the forearm. Rest your right arm so the outer side of your forearm is lying on the surface of the table. Carefully raise your right forearm so the weight meets your chest. The only part of your body that should be moving is your right forearm; your elbow should remain still on the table. Slowly lower your hand back to the starting position and repeat 8 to 10 times.

The movement within this exercise is similar to the action that your arm performs when swinging a tennis racket. Only perform this exercise after you have discussed it with your doctor or physical therapist.
