There’S No Shame in Finding a Marriage Counselor

No matter how fun the first few years of a relationship may be, everyone runs into troubles and no marriage is perfect. The difference between couples who stay together and those who run for the d word is all in how you deal with those issues.

In a sentence, marriage is not easy. The honeymoon phase is always fun, but it always ends. After that, you must work hard to consider the needs of your spouse as well as your own needs. Communicate with each other. If you are both willing to admit that your issues need addressing and work, there is nothing you can't overcome.

Before you allow your problems to become too overwhelming, finding a marriage counselor can be the difference between a long-lasting forever marriage and an all-consuming and devastating divorce.

1. Communication: The first step in healing a hurting marriage is to talk openly about your problems and communicate. This is where finding a marriage counselor can be beneficial. It is very difficult to communicate without a mediator to keep things cordial. Couples tend to escalate discussions to fights, and often say things that can leave a permanent mark on the relationship. By finding a marriage counselor, you can have a neutral person to look at your problems objectively and help you to make it through them.

2. You're Never Too Old to Learn: Early in the process, it is a good idea to accept that neither of you know everything and that there is no age limit in turning to God. You might want to turn to your church to find Sunday school lessons for adults that might help you deal with marital issues. If there are no appropriate Sunday school lessons for adults in your area, you may want to schedule some private counseling time with your pastor. He or she will be happy to help you get back on the right path.

3. When Larger Problems Are the Issue: Everyday squabbles about money and childcare are common. However, if you or your spouse are having difficulties because of drugs, infidelity or other issues, these things must be dealt with. If drugs are the problem, you will want to find a NY rehab center and get help. A NY rehab center (or in whatever state you happen to reside) can help immensely. Don't try to deal with addiction issues alone! There are professionals who can help, and you will have a much higher success rate if you allow yourself to seek their guidance.

4. Don't Give Up: Marriage is a lasting bond that should not be severed lightly. Through the difficult times, you have to keep working. There was a reason you fell in love and married in the first place, and it is up to you to find it. Perhaps you might want to take some time away from the kids to spend together and rediscover what you love about each other. If you are both willing to work for change, you can overcome your problems. Finding a marriage counselor is a great place to start.
