How to Make a Mean Pizza: From Dough to Pizza Spices and Everything In Between
Everyone loves pizza. And it doesn't have to be delivery to taste good. You can make it on your own. Just follow the instructions below to have a fun time in the kitchen.
1. Doughboy: You can buy the dough in the frozen section of a grocery store, or you can make it yourself. To do the latter, proof the yeast by adding a quarter teaspoon of sugar over yeast in a bowl of a cup and a quarter of lukewarm water. The yeast should bubble. Add 2 cups flour and salt and a tablespoon of oil. Blend and add another 1 1/2 to 2 cups of flour. Now you can remove the yeast from its bowl and place it on a lightly floured surface. Knead by folding it in half and pressing with the heel of your hands. Turn it slightly and repeat. Do this until the dough is elastic. Next, place it into a bowl lined in grease. Cover it with a paper towel and let it rise for about 40 minutes. When you press your fingertips into the dough, indentations should remain. Remove the dough back onto the floured surface. Knead it again and let it stand before rolling it, from the center, into a small circle. The thickness will double in the oven, so make it according to how you like your pizza crust.
2. Cook, Prepare: Preheat your oven to 500 degrees. Transfer the dough to a baking sheet and add some tomato sauce, shredded or sliced mozzarella, and toppings to your liking. Pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, broccoli, red onion, chicken, anchovy and whatever else you desire can go onto the pizza. Then brush the crust with olive oil and pop it into the oven for 15 to 20 minutes depending on how crusty you like it. Check on your pizza frequently so that it doesn't burn or cook unevenly. Turn it if you suspect one side is browning faster than another. If you like spinach, basil, any ham or prosciutto or garlic, add them underneath the pizza to prevent them from being charred and overdone.
3. Enjoy: Extract the pizza from the oven, and cut it with a pizza cutter or a chef's knife. If you want to use your pizza cutter, press down hard, move it back and forth, and then push it through the entire pizza. Now you can add your pizza spices. Oregano, parsley, Parmesan or Romano and red pepper are some of the more popular pizza spices. Other spices and herbs like parsley, thyme and cayenne pepper you may like also.
After you add your pizza spices you're ready to eat. Mangia!
