How to Prevent Computer Spying

    • 1). Download all the latest security updates and patches for your operating system. If you are running Microsoft Windows, you can do this by clicking "Start," "Windows Update."

    • 2). Install a software firewall. Microsoft Windows XP and newer includes a basic firewall, but you may want to purchase a more robust one for higher security. Many Internet security suites will include a software firewall and potentially an anti-spyware program.

    • 3). Download or purchase anti-spyware software to run on your computer. Many free scanners are available, but you will want one that runs in the background, as antivirus software does, to ensure the highest security.

    • 4). Increase your browser security settings to at least medium.

    • 5). Read all license agreements and security warnings before you install new software.

    • 6). Click the red "X" at the top-right of the window whenever a random popup appears on a website that is asking you to click "Okay" or "Agree."

    • 7). Avoid free music- and file-sharing programs. Microsoft indicates that additional software, such as spyware, can come bundled with these programs.

    • 8). Read your email carefully before opening any attachments. If you receive an unsolicited email attachment from a stranger or one that you are unsure of, do not open it.
