    • 1). Clean the mug you want to paint in warm soapy water and remove any price stickers from the surface. Rinse the mug and then set it out to air-dry.

    • 2). Wet a clean cloth or paper towel with rubbing alcohol and thoroughly wipe off the mug to remove any soap residue that may be left on the surface from washing the mug. Wait for the rubbing alcohol on the mug to dry.

    • 3). Empty a small portion from a bottle of acrylic enamel paint you plan to use on the mug on to a painter's palette. Repeat this step for each color of paint you desire to use.

    • 4). Pour some water into a disposable cup for washing your paintbrush after you switch to a different color of paint.

    • 5). Dip a paintbrush into the paint on the palette and begin painting the design you want on the mug. You may want to use a stencil to create certain shapes, especially if you do not feel confident in your ability to paint the shape accurately by hand.

    • 6). Allow the paint on the mug to dry for at least 1 hour after you have finished painting. Make sure all layers of paint have thoroughly air-dried before continuing to the next step.

    • 7). Place the mug into a cool oven and set the temperature between 325 and 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not preheat the oven, as this can cause the mug to crack or shatter while baking.

    • 8). Turn the oven off after 30 minutes and let the mug cool completely before removing. Set the mug aside for 72 hours before using.
