How to Cure Patellar Tendonitis
- 1). Make sure to rest your injured knee. One you have been diagnosed with patellar tendonitis, it is very important that your knee be rested as soon as possible. Avoid activities that will aggravate it. Any undue stress or movement will make the condition worse and prolong recovery time.
- 2). Apply an ice pack to the affected knee. The cold will help control swelling, inflammation and any bleeding. Your tendon can function normally when swelling and inflammation are reduced. Apply the ice pack immediately after the injury or diagnosis. Use 20 minutes twice daily or when needed.
- 3). Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication such as Naprosyn, Motrin or its generic, ibuprofen. These help decrease swelling and pain. Make sure to read and carefully follow the directions before taking the medication.
- 4). Wear a knee band or support for the injured knee to lessen the pain associated with patellar tendonitis. Talk to your physician to find out which knee band or support is best for you.
- 5). Start stretching exercises once you can recover. Stretching your calf, quadriceps and hamstring muscles must be done as a warm-up before you resume activities. Getting into the habit of stretching once the symptoms subside will aid in preventing a recurrence of patellar tendonitis.
