Instructions for Building Vinyl Fence

    Planning

    • Plan out the area for your fencing by drawing it out beforehand on a piece of paper. Find out your property borders from your local building association and draw these to scale on your piece of paper. Try to draw the fence line so that you can use the full width of your vinyl fencing panels. Cutting the vinyl is difficult and weakens the material. Mark all the corners of the fence on the sheet as well, and include any fence gates that you may wish to include. Consider putting gates at the front of the fence that leads to the front yard, or another portion of the yard that is not to be fenced in. Mark out the fence in your yard according to your drawing, driving a stake into the ground where all the posts and gate sections will be.

    Installing Posts

    • Install the posts for your corners and gates according to the measurements given with the vinyl paneling. Vinyl fencing sets have different measurements for posts according to the width of the panels being installed. This will ensure that you do not end up with large gaps or areas where the panels are too close together. You will then need to dig the hole for the posts using a post hole digger. These can be bought from your local hardware store. To keep the posts in place, fill the bottom of the hole with a small amount of gravel and concrete. This will prevent strong winds or the shifting of dirt from putting your post at an angle.

    Panels

    • Once the posts are in place, use stakes and string to show you where the fencing will need to be placed. Most vinyl sets are easy to put together and have pieces that fit like a jigsaw puzzle. Rail hanger brackets will attach to the posts you have placed in your yard and these will hold the vinyl panels in place. The vinyl panels will slide into the brackets and lock into place. A gate will attach in the same manner. You will likely have to screw down some portions of the fence to keep it in place and to prevent strong winds from dislodging your panels.
