Paschim Banga is a state in India, which is located towards the eastern portion of the country. The state is bound by neighboring states of Orissa, Assam, Bihar, Sikkim and Jharkhand. It also shares its international boundaries with Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan.

Paschim Banga comprises the Himalayan ranges and the Gangetic plain. The state played an important role in the Indian freedom struggle. Kolkata, the capital of Paschim Banga was also the capital of the erstwhile British Raj. The state has scores of luminaries in the field of music, fine arts and literature. The first Asian Nobel Laurete, Rabindranath Tagore, was a native resident of the state.

The traditional Bengali folk music is called Baul. The other forms of music here are Gombhira and Bhawaiya. The songs are usually sung along with an instrument called Ektara. Nazrul Geeti and Rabindrasangeet are some of the most respected and renowned music forms. The Chau dance of Purulia is a rare form of tribal dance.

Exploring the State

Darjeeling is located in the lap of the snow capped Himalayan ranges. The destination is popular for its rafting amenities and toy trains. Other places to visit nearby are the Kalimpong, Kurseong and Batasia Loop.

Sunderban houses the famous Royal Bengal Tiger and the largest estuarine forests in the world. Tourists can take a boat ride amidst the forests through the river and get an enchanting view of the mangrove.

Kolkata is renowned for its literary, revolutionary and artistic heritage. Famous scholars in the field of literature likeBankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Mahashweta Devi, Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Rabindranath Tagore and Nazrul Islam belong to Paschim Banga. Kolkata houses the famous Nakhoda Mosque, Dakhineshwar, Nicco Park, Victoria Memorial, Birla Planetarium, and St. Paul's Cathedral.

Howrah Bridge is another architectural marvel in the state. It is built over the Hooghly River. The resorts on the Digha beach are marvelous and offer a very soothing and calm atmosphere.

Getting There

Paschim Banga is well connected to all the cities in the country through railways, road and air.

The Howrah station is one of the oldest railway stations in the country and is well connected to all the important cities. Trains are available from the station on a regular basis. The other major stations in Paschim Banga are the Kolkata, Kharagpur station, Adra and many more.
