How to Upgrade From XP 64 to Vista 64
- 1). Back up all of your files to an external drive or removable media device before proceeding.
- 2). Purchase your desired edition of Windows Vista: Home Basic, Home Premium, Business or Ultimate. Users with Windows XP 64-bit can purchase either an upgrade copy or a full edition copy of Windows Vista 64-bit but will have to perform a clean install regardless of the version.
- 3). Insert your Windows Vista DVD into your optical drive. Click "Start." Click "Shut Down" to open the "Turn off computer" window. Click "Restart" to log off from Windows XP 64-bit.
- 4). Press any key at the prompt to run the contents of the Windows Vista DVD. Enter your regional and language options. Click "Next."
- 5). Click "Install Now." Enter your product key into the necessary fields. Click "Next." Choose the correct Windows Vista 64-bit edition from the versions. Check "I have selected the edition of Windows that I purchased." Click "Next."
- 6). Read the license terms. Click "I accept the license terms," then click "Next" to continue.
- 7). Click "Custom (Advanced)" on the installation page. Choose your Windows XP 64-bit partition from the list of drives. Click "Drive Options (Advanced)." Click "Format." Follow the onscreen directions to erase the contents of the partition.
- 8). Click "Next." Windows Vista will install itself to your hard drive. Your computer may reboot several times during the installation process. Do not press any keys, even if prompted.
- 9). Choose an account name, password and avatar. Click "Next." Enter a name for your computer, and choose a desktop background. Click "Next."

Select your computer's location from the options. Click "Next" to complete Windows Vista 64-bit setup.
