    Steps to Relieve Hip Pain

    • 1). Try ice or heat treatments to help to bring down the inflammation. Use ice early on to help reduce swelling, and use heat in more extreme pain to relax the tissues to improve blood flow. Most people use ice packs and heating pads or hot towels. It is important to use them for only 20 minutes at a time.

    • 2). Do stretching. This relieves the pressure caused by inflammation, strengthens your hips, increases the flow of blood to the area, and generally decreases the amount of hip pain. Also try hip-strengthening exercises such as brisk walking and swimming to relieve hip pain.

    • 3). Seek the help of an orthopedic doctor. He might prescribe medications to decrease the inflammation and relieve the hip pain. Commonly prescribed medications include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as oxaprozin, naproxen, aspirin and ibuprofen. He also might recommend oxycodone and corticosteroids to help with swelling and pain. You can take over-the-counter acetaminophen for milder pain.

    • 4). Consider self-hypnosis combined with relaxation techniques. A licensed hypnotherapist will help you use techniques to ease the pain and relax, as well as tips on how to manage pain effectively.
