Significant Side Effects

• The most significant or common side effects of Nasalcort usually pose no long term dangers. Approximately 5 percent of Nasalcort users report pharyngitis, making this the most common side effect of the drug. Nosebleeds are also common, occurring in slightly more than 2 percent of users. Around 2 percent of patients who take Nasalcort experience an increased amount of coughing. Burning, dryness or irritation to the inside of your nose may also occur in the moments immediately following use.
  
  

Types of Other Side Effects

• Nasalcort also has the potential to cause a number of other less common, but not dangerous, side effects. Gastrointestinal effects are possible while taking the drug, including nausea or vomiting. Some patients experience neurological or sensory side effects while taking Nasalcort, such as blurred vision, eye pain or discharge, headaches, lightheadedness, dizziness, decreases in the sensations of taste or smell, ringing in the ears and weakness.
  
  

Features

• There are some medications which decrease the effectiveness of Nasalcort, requiring you to use the spray more frequently. Increasing the dosage in this way causes an increased risk of side effects from Nasalcort. Because ephedrine, phenobarbital and Rifadin all have this effect upon Nasalcort, doctors rarely prescribe the combination to patients. Additionally, taking a higher dosage of Nasalcort increases your risk for developing symptoms related to an overdose of the drug. Symptoms of a Nasalcort overdose include acne, bone fractures, excessive hair growth or lack of menstruation in women, impotence in men, high blood pressure, swelling of your face and muscle weakness.
  
  

Risks

• In addition to minor side effects and the risk of interactions, Nasalcort has the potential to cause serious medical complications. Some patients develop yeast infections of the mouth and throat or notice that wounds take longer to heal while using Nasalcort. Additionally, taking Nasalcort makes you more susceptible to infections and illnesses because it suppresses the actions of your immune system. Infrequently, patients develop septal perforation or a hole in the septum or cartilage that separates your nostrils associated with use of Nasalcort. Rarely, Nasalcort causes serious effects to the eyes, including the growth of cataracts, onset of glaucoma or gradual blindness.
  
  

Considerations

• Because there is not yet sufficient evidence that Nasalcort has no unwanted effects upon the fetus, doctors typically do not prescribe the drug for pregnant women. Nasalcort is not recommended for children under the age of 2, and children under 12 are more likely to experience side effects from the spray. If you have a history of asthma, diabetes, glaucoma or herpes infections in your eyes, your doctor is not likely to prescribe Nasalcort due to its potential side effects.
