That's a simple answer, but there are many reasons why your airway gets blocked - the real cause of snoring.
You can break down the causes of snoring into several parts of the body - the soft palette, the throat, the sinus cavities and the nose.
Daytime sleepiness is most often caused by snoring at night.
Your snoring may be caused by anything from a deviated septum in your nose, on up to obstructive sleep apnea, a serious health condition.
If your snoring is just nose snoring - often caused by sinus problems or a deviated septum, simple nasal strips can often solve the problem easily without discomfort.
Sometimes a humidifier can help moisten the sinus cavity and make you breathe easier.
Some people have an oversize uvula - that little thing that causes loud snoring.
This can be fixed by most ENT surgeons with a laser procedure.
It's a bit painful afterwords, however.
If you suffer from chronic sinusitis, you may want to have yourself checked out for a deviated septum.
That can cause loud nose snoring.
While annoying, it is not as serious as snoring caused by issues with the throat and soft palette.
If you are overweight, or simply have weak muscles in your neck, your airway may get cut off during the night.
This causes snoring and sleep apnea - a more serious condition that makes you actually stop breathing during the night.
Another cause of this type of snoring is a soft palette, the soft part of the roof of your mouth, which clamps down on your airway at night.
Drinking alcohol before bed can making snoring worse - as it relaxes the muscles in your throat.
Smokers have irritation in their sinus areas that contribute to snoring.
Snoring remedies range from the most serious - surgery to less invasive solutions like chin straps and sprays.
By far one of the easiest ways to cut down on snoring is with the use of an anti-snoring pillow.
These specially designed pillows cradle the head and neck in proper position and minimize snoring, while providing comfort.
If your snoring is causing problems with your significant other, don't ignore the health risks of chronic snoring.
Try a snore pillow, and if that does not work, you may have to resort to more un-comfortable solutions to get a good night's sleep - both for you and your partner.
