Rules for Last Man Standing Wrestling Matches
- Last Man Standing matches are a staple of professional wrestling and are occasionally used as a way of ending a high-level feud between two top wrestlers. Last Man Standing matches are usually reserved for main event performers and they can generate a lot of crowd interest in the feud, the performers and the event. There have been many famous Last Man Standing Matches in history, including the Rock vs. Mankind, John Cena vs. Umaga and Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H.
- While normal professional wrestling matches are determined by pinning (pinfall) an opponent's shoulders to the canvas for a three-second count, Last Man Standing matches do not permit pinfalls. Likewise, a wrestler will normally get counted out by a referee if he stays outside of the ring for a 10-second count but that is also waived for Last Man Standing matches. This gives the wrestlers more freedom to travel around the arena and through the crowd without having to worry about getting back into the ring in a set time limit.
- Last Man Standing matches can only be "won" by knocking an opponent to the ground and the referee counting to 10 before he can stand back up. This is similar to the countout rule that is waived for these matches except the location doesn't matter and the count continues until a wrestler stands up. The referee will normally only start counting after a particularly devastating maneuver has been applied and the other wrestler moves away from the fallen competitor. If the other wrestler strikes the fallen wrestler before a 10 count is reached, the count is broken and the referee must start again.
- Part of the appeal of Last Man Standing is the near-guarantee that multiple weapons such as steel chairs and tables will be used in the contest. While a referee will officially disqualify a wrestler in a normal match when weapons are used, they frequently get used anyway while the referee is conveniently distracted or unconscious. Last Man Standing matches have no such complications needed since wrestlers can use whatever they want in front of the referee and the match must continue until a 10 count is registered to a fallen competitor.
