Bollywood and the Singing Connection
The leading ladies who ruled most of 2000's like Preity Zinta, Kajol, Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukherji, Bipasha Basu are nowhere to be seen. These ladies have been quintessentially replaced by the younger generation with the likes of Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Parineeti Chopra. But the significant development over the last 5 years specifically has been the acceptance of content backed stories and strong feminist roles. Which have also seen the rise of the likes of Vidya Balan with roles in path breaking films like Paa, The Dirty Picture, Ishqiyaa and Kahaani which had a strong feminist edge to them, similar to those played by Smita Patil in Mirch Masala, Bhumika, Arth that established strong women in cinema.
Today, in spite of more women oriented roles, the shelf of actresses' in Hindi films is still a defeating point to them, which in Hollywood is not an issue with leading ladies still doing well in their 40's. And then we have stars stepping out the western ways. While Mallika Sherawat is all headed in hunt of a Hollywood career in LA, Priyanka Chopra isn't too far away. The Fashion star has taken it to the west to combine her passion for music and make a career out of it.
Seeing her international tracks In My City and Exotic, one could easily say that this girl had easily camouflaged with the western ways. Her recent international track €Exotic' with PITBULL was an example of this. While singing is proving to be alternate career route for most celebrities including the likes of Ayushmaan Khurana and Manish Paul, television channels and their online portal are making the most of it by promoting them. While MTV has harped on Ayushmaan's success through Coke Studio or Unplugged, Sony Mix has marked its presence with Pocket Radio with Anurag Pandey. And have they been successful? Without a doubt, yes!
