Most Efficient Way to Run a Heat Pump

    Install the Right Size

    • When installing a new heat pump, it is crucial that you choose the appropriate size. Bigger sizes do not always mean they are better. Choosing an oversize heat pump may cause itself to turn on and off frequently, making it less efficient, and it may take a toll on its components as it runs for longer periodic cycles. A correctly sized heat pump will provide your home with the right humidity and level of comfort compared to that of an oversize pump.

    Increasing the Air Flow

    • A good functioning air duct system should have a return register and supply register installed in every room in the house. Most houses, though, will only have of one to two return registers. Therefore, the air from the other areas must locate the path back to the registers to be reheated or cooled. Any form of obstruction in returning air can cause problems in air circulation.

Other obstructions and blockages in the air supply and air duct system can either depressurize or pressurize areas of the house, causing low efficiency and high leakage in air ducts. To improve efficiency and performance of the heat pump, the installation of louvered grilles in doors, walls and ducts in different rooms can improve air flow and circulation. Technicians can also improve air flow through several ways: boosting fan speed, cleaning the coils or enlarging or clearing the return ducts.

    Use the Thermostat Properly

    • Like any other heat combusting system, you may control a heat pump by using a thermostat. It will be more cost-efficient to use an automatic thermostat to help conserve energy when you leave your home.

During the colder season, when heat pumps are used more frequently, some users set the pump's thermostat back to 10 degrees Fahrenheit either automatically or manually before leaving the house or going to sleep.
