Anti Wrinkle Creams - Are Collagen Creams Better Than Anti Oxidant Creams?

We are told all the time in the Western World that we have an aging population.
I guess this why so many of us are now interested in reversing and preventing the effects of aging on our bodies.
Who doesn't want to look and feel younger? One of the most obvious signs of increasing age is our skin.
As we get older the elasticity and tone of our skin decreases causing fine lines sagging and wrinkles.
The myriad of products on the market is a reflection of our youth obsessed culture but no-one wants to look their age anymore.
50 is the new 40 and 40 is the new 30.
Some people even go to the extremes of cosmetic surgery to maintain their youthful appearance with mixed results.
A face lift is a pretty desperate measure and is certainly not risk-free.
Prevention of wrinkle formation is the key to a younger looking skin.
So limit your sun exposure and definitely don't smoke! So how do you choose the right face wrinkle cream? Firstly you have to know what you are looking for and why.
There are definitely some ingredients used in anti wrinkle and collagen creams that have no benefit towards wrinkle reduction and prevention.
In fact, some anti wrinkle skin creams contain ingredients that are harmful to our skin and may even cause allergic reactions.
So avoid any wrinkle creams that contain a lot of preservatives such as alcohols, polyethylene or any compound derived form petroleum products.
Once you start looking at the ingredients you'll be amazed at what you have been putting on your face.
As well as causing superficial skin reactions and breakouts these toxic compounds get absorbed into your body from your skin.
It can't be good to be absorbing chemical derived from petroleum.
Collagen is touted as an essential ingredient for anti wrinkle creams.
Many of the more expensive anti wrinkle creams on the market advertise the fact that they contain high concentrations of collagen.
In reality, it doesn't matter how much collagen is in a collagen cream because none of it is effective when applied directly to your skin.
Although a lack of collagen in the deeper layers of our skin is what causes wrinkles, collagen is a really large molecule made up of long protein chains.
Our skin is a barrier against environmental toxins and doesn't let any old compound through into the body.
Collagen molecules are far too big to penetrate the skin's protective barrier.
So all of those expensive collagen creams may help moisturize your skin because of the other ingredients they contain but they certainly don't help increase the levels of skin collagen.
You might find a small benefit from these collagen creams due to better skin hydration but they are not really attacking the cause of wrinkles and if you are just getting benefit from the moisturizing properties then I'm sure you can find a cheaper option.
What you really need to treat and prevent face wrinkles is something that repairs damaged skin collagen and increases collagen production.
Collagen is the protein that acts as the framework of our skin.
So when collagen becomes damaged it's structure changes and it becomes disorganized.
Externally we see this as the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.
The thing that damages collagen is free radical formation.
Free radicals are chemical compounds that are unstable and they are produced by many things including UV radiation from the sun.
As we get older the amount of free radical formation increases causing many of the disease of aging.
To reduce the amount of damage that free radicals cause you need ingredients that make the free radicals stable again.
These compounds are called anti oxidants.
It is now very common for people to take anti oxidant supplements like CoEnzyme Q10 and vitamin C to try and prevent the diseases of aging.
Drinking green tea can also help.
Whilst ingesting anti oxidants will certainly improve your health it doesn't necessarily decrease your wrinkly skin.
Applying anti oxidants directly to your skin will have a much more localized effect.
So make sure that any anti wrinkle skin cream that you choose is not a useless, but expensive collagen cream but an anti wrinkle skin cream that is high in the right kind of antioxidants.
So do your research first before you buy! Of course you must first test and make sure that you are not allergic to your chosen cream so always try and get a free sample and use it for about a week before you commit to your purchase.
