How to Build Landscape Steps on an Incline

    • 1). Use baking flour, landscape paint or wooden stakes and a string to outline the path you want the steps to follow. If the incline is steep, create a zig-zag pattern with a landing every 8 feet so people can rest. If the incline varies, you may want the stairs to cut into the incline in a straight or curved path. The width of your steps should be at least 5 1/2 feet, 5 feet so two people can safely pass and an additional 6 inches will provide a 3-inch buffer on either side so plants and grass will not encroach.

    • 2). Decide on the landscape material you want to use for the steps. Consider the type of stone or pavers used on your patio, walkways and edging for a consistent look throughout.

    • 3). Measure the height of your material to figure the height of each step and the number of steps you will install. For example, steps made of landscape timbers are 6 inches high, because timbers measure 6-by-6 inches, while the height of pavers and stones can vary from 6 to 8 inches.

    • 4). Remove grass, weeds, rocks and other debris from the area within the outlined path. Dig into the incline at a 90 degree angle to create a surface for each step. Steps made from bricks, pavers and landscape timbers are at least 2 feet deep.

    • 5). Use a compactor plate machine or a tamper tool to compress the dirt surface of each step. This will prevent the soil from shifting over time.

    • 6). Spread a 2-inch layer of gravel or sand over the surface of the bottom step. Compact the surface again so the step will sit securely.

    • 7). Place your first stone block on top of the gravel. If you are using bricks or pavers, lay them over the surface in a straight row or a puzzle-like pattern and work gravel between the crevices. Set a level on the surface to ensure the step is straight.

    • 8). Lay each step using the same method as the first step, and work your way to the top of the incline.

    • 9). Backfill any gaps between the steps and the ground with gravel to improve drainage and prevent weeds from growing over the steps.
