    Planning

    • If you are placing a chain link fence along your property line, then you should refer to a copy of your property survey to determine where the line markers are and the measurements of the boundary. You should also call your utility companies to have the utility lines marked and obtain the necessary permits. Use wooden stakes and string or spray paint to mark the boundary lines. Once you determine where your first fence post will be placed, you will need a measuring tape to locate the appropriate distance to the next fence post.

    Materials for Installing Fence Posts

    • To install a fence post, you will need to dig post holes with a trenching shovel or a post-hole digger. Setting the fence posts in concrete will make them sturdier and prevent them from tilting. For this task you will need a 10-gallon bucket, concrete, water and a shovel.

    Fencing Materials

    • For the fence you will need fence posts, top rails, fence fabric, top rail sleeves, loop caps, tie wires, tension bars, tension clamps and carriage bolts. If you are installing a gate in the fence, you will also need a chain link gate, hinges and a fork latch to hold the gate closed.

    Tools

    • To assemble the fence, you will need standard tools, including a socket wrench set, level, hack saw or pipe cutter and fencing pliers. You will also need specialized tools, including fencing pliers and a pull chain to help stretch the chain link fabric.
