    • 1). Create a personal record file containing information about every creditor you have and the amount you owe to each one. Include details about your income including its source and frequency. List each piece of property you own and give a value. Compile information about your monthly living expenses. You need this information when you fill out the bankruptcy forms.

    • 2). Obtain the following forms: Official Form 1 (Voluntary Petition), Director's Form 201A/B, Official Form 19, Official Form 21, Exhibit D to Official Form 1, Director's Form 280, Official Form 22A, Official Form 6, Schedule G of Official Form 6, Official Form 7, Official Form 8, Director's Form 203 and Official Form 23. These forms are available online and from North Carolina bankruptcy courts.

    • 3). Fill out each form using the information your compiled about your assets, debts, income, property and living expenses. The forms are lengthy, but relatively self-explanatory.

    • 4). Send the completed forms and a filing fee to the North Carolina federal district court nearest to your place of residence. For instance, if you live in or near Asheville, file your papers at district courthouse located in Asheville.

    • 5). Follow the court orders and appear at any hearings the court requires. During the bankruptcy process, the court may ask you to provide additional information about your finances or to appear at a hearing. Watch your mail for notices from the court detailing what you must do and when it must be done by.
