How to Rub in Suntan Lotion
- 1). Use a suntan lotion with a Sun Protection Factor strong enough to last for the amount of time you will be exposed to the sun. Each unit of SPF is rated for 20 minutes of protection in direct sun before the skin begins to redden and burn. For example, an SPF of 15 means 15 x 20 minutes = 300 minutes of sun protection, which is 5 hours.
- 2). Apply the suntan lotion to all exposed areas of the skin and rub the lotion until the skin is no longer discolored but simply glistens. Don't forget the tops of feet, the back of the legs and neck, and across the back in places most people cannot reach. Enlist the help of a close friend to reach those difficult spots.
- 3). Reapply suntan lotion, rubbing in a circular motion to work it into the skin, immediately after swimming or exercising, when sweat can reduce the effectiveness of previous lotion applications.
