How to Salute a British Officer Who Is Not in Uniform

    • 1). Commence the salute process three paces prior to being level with the officer and complete it three paces beyond him if you walk past him. If you are non-commissioned and approach an officer with the intention of talking to him, halt two paces away from him and commence the salute.

    • 2). Use the right hand unless this is impossible, in which case use the left hand. For example, if you are carrying an object other than a weapon in the right hand, salute with the left hand.

When carrying a weapon, approach to within two paces and salute if you can.

However, if both hands are full, do not attempt to salute. Instead turn your head to face the officer as you approach him or move past him.

    • 3). Conduct the salute by standing to attention and raising your hat, using the right hand if you can, and the left hand as an alternative. If you are not wearing a hat, just turn your head smartly toward the officer while standing to attention.

The officer will respond in the manner suited to his rank, the circumstances and his regimental traditions.
