DIY Loudspeaker Cable
- 1). Determine both the run of length from amplifier to speaker, and the speaker impedance load in ohms, typically a value such as 4- or 8-ohms; these two factors determine, more than any other, the suitability of cabling used with a given stereo system, but amplifier power is also a factor and larger amps require larger cables.
- 2). Check the connection of current cables for oxidation; oxidization interferes with good electrical connection. Check to see if the speaker cable and connector are different metals because the bi-metallic effect may hasten the formation of oxides, particularly in humid environments.
- 3). Solder the exposed tips of your new speaker cables to prevent oxidization and ensure longer life for your connection without requiring reseating the cable. Double check that connections are strong. Many home stereo speaker connectors are made for convenience rather than reliability.
