How to Make Happy New Year Hats for Kids
- 1). Measure around your child's head using a measuring tape.
- 2). Choose one color of foam sheet to make the hat. Measure and cut two strips about 2 inches wide.
- 3). Overlap the edges of the foam strips to form one long strip, and staple the edges together. Wrap the strip around your child's head to fit and mark the measurement where the pieces meet using a pencil, leaving about an extra inch for overlap. Remove the strip from the child's head and place two staples in the marked area to form a closed circle to fit the child's head.
- 4). Hand-write numbers or use a stencil to trace the numbers for the year on the other sheet of foam. Use multiple colors or just one.
- 5). Cut the numbers from the foam using scissors.
- 6). Place the numbers on a paper plate and decorate them with craft glitter. Draw decorations by squeezing small lines and designs onto the numbers using a bottle of white glue, and then pour a small amount of craft glitter over the wet glue. Tap the edge of the numbers onto the paper plate, and bend the paper plate slightly in the middle to pour leftover glitter back into the bottle. Allow the glue to dry for about 20 minutes.
- 7). Embellish with additional sparkle by gluing beads and sparkling gems onto the numbers using white glue. Allow to dry for about 10 minutes.
- 8). Create additional decorations, as desired, using washable markers, crayons or acrylic paints. Create swirls, polka dots, stars or other festive designs. Decorate both the numbers and hatband, as desired.
- 9). Add a drop of white glue to the bottom of the numbers and have the children press them onto the front of the hatband. Hold in place for about 30 seconds to secure.
