How to Mount Drapery Post Holdbacks

    • 1). Install the drapery panels over the window first, if necessary.

    • 2). Measure the entire length of the drapery panel from the rod to the hem with the tape measure. Divide this measurement by 3 to determine one-third of the drapery panel length. For example, if the total drapery panel length is 84 inches, divide 84 / 3 = 28.

    • 3). Make a pencil mark one-third from the top of the drapery panel and one-third from the bottom of the drapery panel along both sides of the window. Using the same example, make the marks 28 inches from the top and the bottom edges of the drapes.

    • 4). Step back and assess the two marks you made, imagining which point you wish to use for the post holdbacks. Both points would be suitable -- this is a matter of personal preference. Have a helper hold the post holdbacks in place while you view the window from a distance to help you select the point you prefer.

    • 5). Drill pilot holes for the post holdbacks at the selected pencil mark on each side of the window. Make the holes about 1 to 2 inches away from the side edge of the window trim.

    • 6). Screw the post holdbacks into the pilot holes, turning the posts until they rest securely and tightly against the wall surface.

    • 7). Arrange the drapes on the outside edge of the post holdbacks, creating a bloused effect with the fabric above the holdbacks. Step back to assess the drapes and make any additional adjustments necessary.
