Shed Organizing Ideas

Whether you're ready for spring cleaning or you just want to clean up around your lawn, you may find that it's time to focus on your shed. During the warmer months, it's easy to fill up the shed with gardening supplies and products designed for lawn care. In the colder months, you're less likely to want to focus any of your time and attention on the outdoor areas. Before your shed grows out of control again, take some time to clean it out completely, and organize the items you want to keep. - Use pegboards and peg hooks to store tools, lawn care products and other products that you use frequently. Arrange the hooks on the pegboard, spacing them out to make room for your things. When the items are in place, outline the edges with a black marker. Run the marker around the edges, and remove the item. Write inside the outline what the item is, and hang the item back on the hook. Each time you remove a tool, you'll know exactly where it goes. You won't find yourself fumbling around trying to remember where each item goes. It's also helpful if you remove several tools at once.
- Place sturdy metal shelves around your shed to hold the items that you use frequently but that don't fit easily on a pegboard or hook. Arrange the heavier items on the bottom shelves, as well as items that you use less frequently, such as heavy tools like a chainsaw or circular saw. Alternatively, arrange shelves along one wall in your shed, and use a pegboard on the opposite wall, which lets you clearly see what you have available and exactly where to find it in the future. Use baskets or plastic boxes on the shelves for additional storage.
- Use plastic containers to store smaller items and look for boxes of different sizes. Use the smallest containers to store jar lids, screws and drill bits. Once you fill a box, add a white label to the front and clearly mark what is inside as well as the date. When you take things out of the box, change the label to reflect what's currently inside. Stack smaller boxes on top of each other, and use the larger boxes on bottom shelves. Place boxes with lawn and garden supplies and other hazardous materials on top shelves and out of reach of small children.
