How to Paint Wood With Varnish Stain
- 1). Use a piece of sandpaper and sand down the area that will be stained by brushing the sandpaper up and down over the wood until it is smooth and all rough edges have been removed. Sanding also ensures that the stain applies well and penetrates deep into the wood. Use a piece of cloth to remove any sanding residue that may stick to the surface of the wood
- 2). Open the can of varnish stain and dip the tip of the paintbrush into the can. Do not load the brush up with more than half of a brush of stain, as it can cause a mess when the stain is applied. Remove any excess stain by rubbing the brush against the inside of the can to prevent dripping.
- 3). Apply the stain to the wood using short, even strokes. Hold the brush down close to the bristles for optimal control. Holding the brush too high on the handle will result in an uneven and possibly messy stain job. Continue until you have covered the entire surface of the wood with a coat. Allow 24 hours for the stain to dry. If necessary, apply a second coat once the 24 hours has expired.
