How to Tighten Door Hinges
- 1). Fully open the door. Turn each of the screws in the door hinges clockwise, using a screwdriver instead of a power drill. Using a power drill may strip the screws. Tighten the hinge screws going into both the door and into the jamb. Remove any screw that continues spinning without ever fully tightening into the wood. A screw that does this is stripped.
- 2). Install a replacement screw that has the same diameter, and an additional 1/4 inch of length, to replace any stripped screws. Tighten the longer screw into the hinge, using the screwdriver. If this does not work, proceed to Step 3.
- 3). Remove all the screws from the side of the hinge that the loose screw is located in. Insert white glue into the screw hole. Pack the hole fully with toothpicks. Wipe away any excess glue from around the screw hole, and allow the glue to harden. Cut the toothpicks so that the ends are flush with the surface edge, using a utility knife.
- 4). Drill a pilot hole into the toothpicks, at a size about 1/2 of the diameter of the screw to be installed. Open the hinge and install the other screws into the hinge, using a screwdriver. Install the screw into the pilot hole drilled into the toothpicks, using the screwdriver, also.
