    • 1). Open your copy of InDesign. Though you'll be learning from an online interface, you can follow along with InDesign.

    • 2). Read the InDesign frequently asked questions list, hosted on the Adobe website. Get information about InDesign's capabilities, along with information on the most compatible version of InDesign for your needs.

    • 3). Visit Adobe's dedicated page for InDesign instruction, offering details on setting up the software, getting started and working within the desktop publishing program. Included online are user-to-user knowledge bases, questions and answers; Adobe-expert-supplied tutorials; advanced techniques; step-by-step instructions and video clips.

    • 4). Visit university websites in search of online InDesign information. Options include Iowa State University's step-by-step tutorial on how to set up an InDesign page, including snapshots and images. Verify that the online information syncs with the version of InDesign you're using as screens, menus and options change with each release.

    • 5). Watch video clips online of basic task completion in InDesign. Clips will either show a person completing the task with a view to his monitor, or film-like screen captures showing a click-by-click completion of the task. While some videos may be posted by amateurs, you'll find other options offered by universities such as the University of Oklahoma's collection of InDesign CS4 instructional videos.

    • 6). Enroll in an online course on your version of InDesign -- keep in mind that training classes are usually synced with the latest release of InDesign. As of June 2011, InDesign CS5 was the latest major release and CS5.5 the latest minor release.
