New Classics on Blu-ray for August 2014
Part 2 of 2. Rounding out this month's Blu-ray releases are a rather charming World War II comedy starring Anthony Quinn; one of the first significant doomsday movies ever made; Bob Fosse's semi-autobiographical musical from 1979; and a classic sex comedy starring Peter O'Toole and Woody Allen.
A charming World War II comedy from director Stanley Kramer, The Secret of Santa Vittoria will see a limited release on Blu-ray courtesy of Screen Archives Entertainment. The film starred Anthony Quinn as the mayor of the Italian hillside village of Santa Vittoria, who rouses his people to celebrate the death of Mussolini. But with a contingent of retreating Nazis about to pass through, the mayor leads hundreds of his townspeople in a massive effort to stash away a million bottles of wine in an old Roman cave before the Germans arrive. Limited to just 3,000 copies, the release of The Secret of Santa Vittoria will include an isolated score track and the original theatrical trailer.

One of the first significant doomsday dramas, On the Beach features a stellar leading cast and will make its debut on Blu-ray in August. Directed by Stanley Kramer, the film starred Gregory Peck as a submarine commander surviving in Australia, where the last remaining humans on Earth struggle to survive after most life has been exterminated in a nuclear holocaust. But when his crew hears a faint signal emanating from San Diego, he leads the submarine toward an uncertain future. Along for the ride are Ava Gardner as his emotionally wrecked lover, Fred Astaire as a guilt-ridden nuclear scientist, and Anthony Perkins and Donna Anderson as a married couple just starting their lives. Released by Kino Lorber, On the Beach has no known technical specs or special features at this time.

A stylish musical with great performances and frenzied dance numbers, Bob Fosse's All That Jazz makes its debut on Blu-ray this month. Roy Scheider starred as Joe Gideon, a theater director and choreographer juggling a new Broadway production, editing his latest movie, and dealing with his ex-wife (Leland Palmer) and current girlfriend (Ann Reinking), all with the help of a daily dose of amphetamines. Nominated for multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor, All That Jazz arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of The Criterion Collection. Extras include audio commentaries from Scheider and editor Alan Heim; a 1980 episode from the TV talk show Tomorrow featuring Fosse and choreographer Agnes de Mille; fresh interviews with Heim and Fosse biographer Sam Wasson; Portrait of a Choreographer (2007), a documentary on Fosse, and The Soundtrack: Perverting the Standards (2007), a look at the music in the film; and more.

A hilarious sex comedy from director Clive Donner, What's New Pussycat? will debut on Blu-ray in August via Kino Lorber. The film starred Peter O'Toole as fashion designer and notorious womanizer Michael James, who seeks the help of psychiatrist Dr. Fassbinder (Peter Sellers) to repair his relationship with fiancé Carole (Romy Schneider). Complicated his therapy are the demented Fassbinder stalking another patient (Capucine), his sex addict friend (Woody Allen), a neurotic American (Paula Prentiss), and a exceedingly sexy parachutist (Ursula Andress) who drops into Michael's life unexpectedly. Kino has yet to make any technical specs or added extras public at this time.
